Artist's Comments

Seriously. If you're wanting a dog or cat, be sure to consider an adult dog or cat from the shelter. Don't, on a whim, get a kitten or a puppy, just because they're cute.

I actually posted something about adopting adult animals on a forum once. I explained the good things about adopting an adult animal, making suggestions to people who are considering to get a dog/cat. Adults don't get homes as quickly as puppies/kittens, obviously.

Responses I got were such as:

"Some people actually like to name their pet."
"So just let the puppies and kittens rot longer?"
"Like people, animals carry a lot of emotional baggage with them."

Firstly, I'd love to know how a name would affect saving the life of an adult pet. Secondly, I never said anything like that in my post, I was merely making a suggestion to those who desire a companion. Last, who cares about the animal's past. Of course an abused and neglected animal may take more time to train and rehabilitate, but that doesn't mean the animal is undeserving just because of its blown out unfortunate past.

Others said it's easier to train a puppy or a kitten. Actually, that is a yes and a no. Old dogs can learn new tricks, you just have to work with them. Training shouldn't be a factor of whether to adopt the animal or not. Regardless if it's a puppy or a full grown adult dog, training is a necessity.

Some people really baffle me with their stupidity, lack of common sense and selfishness.

[I'm no expert, but I do have common sense.] On a further note, of course it is much easier to introduce a new puppy to an adult dog that is already in your home. But with cats? In my experience, seeing as I have ten cats, it doesn't always matter what their age is. Cats learn to live, like and even love each other over time. With dogs, it's a whole different story. A neutral grounds meeting is always necessary.

Sometimes, an adult pet would fit your lifestyle much better than any puppy or kitten.

Adult dogs and cats have personalities - puppies and kittens have yet to develope their personality, and it very well could surprize you.

Anyways, if you want a dog/cat, consider an adult.
