A puppy mill is typically a farm or facility housing dozens to even hundreds of dogs at a time, two or more dogs used as breeding stock are crammed into small wire cages and forced to breed over and over and over again until they either die or until they can no longer reproduce - thus being useless, the dogs are disposed of or destroyed. Most puppy mills house their breeding stock in unsanitary and dangerous conditions, where diseases can easily spread. The breeding stock are not socialized, are not tested for genetic conditions that can be passed onto their offspring and receive no veterinary care. The offspring are taken from their mother as early as four weeks old to be shipped to pet stores or sold to brokers and to be bought by unsuspecting costumers.
Normally products of puppy mills come with a variety of health issues, such as carrying parvo and kennel cough. Due to irresponsible breeding, it is not uncommon for these puppies to have minor to severe genetic conditions passed on by their parents; sometimes they even display behavioral and temperamental problems (this can either occur as early as possible or later on in life). The only way the existence of puppy mills will cease is when everyone stops buying from pet stores. Of course, that'll never happen - but it doesn't hurt to wish. If you desire a companion animal, please consider adopting or rescuing rather than purchasing from a pet store or a commercial breeder. Although adopting from a shelter cannot guarantee the state of health and temperament, it is giving an unfortunate dog/cat the chance at life that they deserve. Just remember when you go to purchase that adorable little puppy at the pet shop, you are supporting and promoting puppy mills, unethical and commercial breeding. The cage your puppy was in is now empty for a new arrival. I didn't get to see that segment on Oprah about puppy mills, but I do hope that it opened the eyes of many viewers. Search "puppy mills" on YouTube, enjoy.
